How to spruce up your fake Christmas tree like a pro

No more funny gaps or tactically placed baubles

Touted as the affordable alternative to the real deal, the best artificial Christmas trees are realistic, fuss-free and great value for money.

No longer all wonky wire frame and naff-looking needles, 2023 tree-tech involves injection moulding for the most realistic sprigs, even up close. One thing to note: trees made from PVC are almost impossible to recycle – and need to be used for at least nine years to have less environmental impact than their natural alternatives.

Buy well and you’ve got a tree for life. Invest in a pre-lit Christmas tree and you’ll swerve the annual lights detangling, too.

1. Space

Pick a space, unbox and stack the tree components on the wire frame, then secure. Not a fan of metal stands? Throw on a tree skirt.

2. Shape

Even the best artificial Christmas trees need fluffing – it helps to make your tree look fuller and more natural. First, unfurl the pliable branches – as if you’re undoing a plait – then shape. Worried it looks a bit too tidy? Re-bend the branches for a perfectly imperfect finish.

3. Style

Dress your tree in the very best baubles of 2023. Faux Christmas trees carry the weight of heavier baubles far better than a fresh fir, so no more tentative hangs.

The pro trick for a more realistic (fake) Christmas tree? Think tonal tips, a bushy base, and finish with a great pine scent – nothing smells better.
