CONTEMPORARY, FASHIONABLE AND AFFORDABLE, HOUSE BY JOHN LEWIS OFFERS STYLE WITHOUT COMPROMISE WITH ITS NEW SPRING/SUMMER 2019 PIECES

With the rise of urban living, house-sharing, smaller homes and renting, House by John Lewis is the perfect fit for spring/summer 2019. ‘Small-space living is in the very DNA of House by John Lewis,’ says Fionnuala Johnston, Partner & Senior Designer, Home Design Studio, ‘alongside contemporary, fashionable designs at great prices.’

There are more than 200 new pieces, from wallpaper to garden furniture. Many are smart in more ways than one; shelving units are freestanding and lightweight yet sturdy, sofas compact yet comfortable, and patterned bed linen is even reversible. Yet there’s no compromise on style – furniture is statement while in-house prints are just bursting with positivity. ‘Everything in the House by John Lewis brand has to hit the mark from both a design point of view and its affordability,’ adds Fionnuala.

Evolving Designs at House by John Lewis & Partners

When House by John Lewis launched in autumn/winter 2012, the plan was to attract a different customer; those from the younger end of the interiors market looking for great-value yet well-designed pieces for their homes. Seven years on, and affordable, contemporary design is still very much at its heart, but, as Fionnuala explains: ‘It’s evolved – we’ve now stopped thinking of the House by John Lewis shopper as someone younger.’

It’s all about clever, multifunctional designs that are fashionable, good quality and great value

Contemporary Colour at House by John Lewis

‘We’ve chosen unexpected colours for spring/summer 2019,’ says Fionnuala. ‘It’s all about mustard, dusty green, lilac and cobalt, rather than the primary colours of previous seasons, making this collection much more interesting and considered. There’s plaster pink too, which can be used as a neutral.

‘House by John Lewis is also really embracing the trend for coloured furniture – like the new Dice storage unit in Dusty Green and our fabulous Whistler chairs, now in Mustard,’ Fionnuala continues.

The standout prints – Dance Party and Amour – are just as eye-catching. Designed by Amie Jones, Partner & Designer, Home Design Studio, they are fun, happy patterns. ‘I wanted to bring more love into the world, so I designed Amour,’ explains Amie. ‘Dance Party is a really adaptable design, which can be tailored for a particular product – you’ll find it used in a simple way on bed linen, then much bolder on a hero cushion.’

Summer & Beyond at House by John Lewis

‘Outdoor living is really cool for spring/summer 2019,’ says Fionnuala. ‘Don’t miss the Salsa range, which comes in two colour combinations – pastel ombre and orange sunrise – as well as plain shades. It’s already doing really well – another sign that House by John Lewis fans are very much into colour. I love the rocker!’

Summer aside (Fionnuala is already working on autumn/winter 2020), what can we expect? ‘I’m really excited about how House by John Lewis can carry on offering solutions, helping people to organise their homes and live well in small spaces,’ says Fionnuala.
