The kitchen gadgets that’ll save Christmas

Easy hacks to make festive cooking run smoothly

One of the best things about Christmas is the food, isn’t it? From the Christmas Day feast, to picky bits on Boxing Day and cheeses and chutneys throughout. If you’re hosting this year, you don’t want to spend the whole time trapped in the kitchen when you could be with friends and family enjoying games and mulled wine.

In a bid to help, we’ve rounded up some of the best kitchen gadgets that’ll make cooking quicker, better and cheaper. From the £6 peelers that’ll make you super speedy on the spuds to the investment coffee machine that’ll time whenever someone pops over during the holidays.

Dualit Kettle, £129.99
What could be better than a lie-in on Christmas morning with a brew before the madness of the day begins? The Dualit Classic Kettle has mastered the art of subtlety thanks to its patented Whisper Boil technology which drastically reduces noise so you can make a sneaky cup of tea and run back to bed without waking the whole house up on Christmas morning.

Heston Blumenthal by Salter Instant Read Digital Thermometer, £27.99
A kitchen necessity if you’re hosting this Christmas. Save time and peace of mind with this digital thermometer which will tell you (with great precision) if the turkey is ready for the table. It’ll also help you prefect your confectionary and, when the sun returns, could save your bacon at your next barbecue.

Kitchen Aid Mini Stand Mixer, £329
If you can’t quite bring yourself to commit to a big Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, this slimmed-down version is the ideal solution. It’s 20% smaller and 25% lighter but still has the mighty motor for whisking, mixing and kneading to save you precious time throughout the festive season.

ANYDAY Fruit and Vegetable Peelers, £6
Every year we use the same rubbish blunt peeler and promise ourselves next Christmas will be different. So now’s the time to snap up this set of three fruit and vegetable peelers, which stack together to save space. The julienne peeler is great for garnishes and salad toppings, the serrated peeler easily tackles waxy and slippery fruits and the speed peeler makes light work of peeling potatoes.

Ooni Heat Resistant Leather Gloves, £29.99
Do you know what makes life better? Not getting burnt fingers/palms/arms when you’re racing around the kitchen trying to cook for the 5,000 this Christmas. These leather heat-resistant gloves are recommended for use on a barbecue or pizza oven but they’re just as handy for getting things in and out of a conventional oven.

Sage Barista Touch Impress Stainless Steel Coffee Machine, £1,199.95
Make things easier without compromising on quality (or taste) with a sleek machine that can make you better-than-barista coffee in a minute. This deluxe piece of kit has a hosting-friendly two-litre water tank, eight preset cafe favourites, and adjustable grinds, strengths and milk temperatures. Sage’s ThermoJet heating system has a three-second heat-up time while the touchscreen makes life simple and you can even pre-save up to eight customised coffees.

Sonos One SL Smart Speaker, £134
There’s something about cooking to music that makes things much more fun and somehow less stressful, even when you burn the roasties. This speaker is compact enough to fit on any countertop and is humidity resistant so all the steam from cooking the veg won’t affect it. It’s easy to set up, has super clear sound and can be paired with other Sonos speakers throughout your house.

Ninja Foodi OL550UK 11-in-1 SmartLid Multi-Cooker, £299
With three different cooking modes and 11 functions, you can swap pressure-cooking, air-frying and combi-steaming at the touch of a button. Save yourself time by pressure-cooking your roast turkey – it’s 70% faster than in a conventional oven – and make your meal healthir by air-frying your potatoes, which uses up to 75% less fat than frying in a pan.

Oxo Good Grips Chef’s Mandoline, £70
Save time slicing and dicing with this mandoline that’ll do the hard work for you. There’s a food holder included (no sliced fingertips here this Christmas) and sturdy feet to keep everything in place. Change the setting to the exact thickness you need when slicing your veg and wait for the compliments to roll in about how professional it all looks.
