Don’t expect prints or princesses in the wardrobes of this design-led duo – it’s all chic silhouettes and a (mostly) pared-back palette

Effortlessly laidback and cool, Em Wells’ ultra-wearable approach to fashion has earned her more than 270,000 followers on Instagram. Often pictured alongside her equally well-dressed daughter Emilia, who’s five, here Em shares their favourite items to make up stylish spring/summer outfits that will be worn again and again.

Em and Emilia’s fashion must-haves

‘The ultimate spring/summer staple is a loose white T-shirt – but a linen version is even better. Carry this through the coming seasons, on its own on a golden, sunny day or layered with a shirt on a breezy afternoon.’

Whistles Ultimate Linen T-Shirt, £55

‘My go-to accessory – all year round, in fact – is the Ray-Ban Wayfarer. The retro frame flatters most faces and makes any outfit feel instantly cooler.’

Ray-Ban RB2140 Original Wayfarer Sunglasses, £137

‘These brown sandals with a minimalist twist would be a great addition to any shoe collection. Not a particular trend, but a style to be loved and worn year after year.’

SOEUR Uptown Flat Leather Sandals, £195

‘Jeans have slowly moved away from the structured high waist that often felt uncomfortable. For me, these mid-waist, loose-fitting jeans are the way forward – relaxed and easy to dress up or down.’

rag & bone Logan Mid Rise Wide Leg Jeans, £300

‘A statement colour but a classic shape, this green bag is a great pick-me-up addition to your wardrobe. I’ll add an oversized linen shirt and a comfy pair of mid-blue jeans.’

Gerard Darel Lady Leather Handbag, £245

‘While I love a classic beige trench coat, there’s something about a navy one that feels easier to style day to day, which is why this longline version is the one for me.’

Kin Plain Button Trench Coat, £110

‘Emilia has had a pair of these reliable Salt-Water sandals since she was two years old. The leather is soft on her feet and this fisherman style in olive is too cute… Traditional yet versatile at the same time.’

Salt-Water Children’s Water-Resilient Leather Sandals, £47.50

‘I love kids in stripes and the added detail on this one makes for easy styling. The varied patterns and colours are a modern twist on the basic striped tee.’

Mini Boden Kids’ Stripe Volume Sleeve Sweatshirt, £17.55

‘I prefer pants with some movement for Emilia. These are made from a durable cotton fabric and are reversible – inside reveals a red check pattern, so you’re getting two looks for the price of one.’

Little Green Radicals Baby Reversible Check Trousers, £34

‘This playsuit is ideal: the soft-pink gingham is perfect for spring/summer and the loose cut looks so comfortable.’

White Stuff Kids’ Gingham Seersucker Playsuit, £17.60

‘These New Balance trainers are comfortable and sturdy with an easy Velcro strap. We love the colours, which are just cool and look great with everything.’

New Balance Kids’ 574 Riptape Trainers, Nightwatch, £60

‘A fun but tasteful print to add to the mix, I love this collarless style with an easy button-up. Made from lightweight organic cotton fabric, it’s perfect for layering.’

Little Green Radicals Kids’ Reversible Collarless Jacket, £38
